At Meep Meep, giving back to help rescue cats is at the heart of everything we do, so it’s no surprise we love cat cafés so much. We believe life is better when it smells good and does good — and honestly? Cat cafés combine both in the most heart-warming way possible.

☕🐾 A Little History (and a Lot of Heart)

The tale begins overseas — in Japan in the late 1990s — where the concept of spending time with cats over tea or coffee first took off. Cities like Tokyo and Osaka, with their tiny apartments and busy lifestyles, gave rise to calm havens where humans could decompress, sip something warm, and let cats do what they do best: bring joy.

From there, the idea spread like sunshine through cat whiskers, eventually making its way to the United States. In 2014, Cat Town Café became the first permanent cat café in the U.S., setting a precedent for connection, compassion, and creative adoption spaces. Around the same time, KitTea Cat Lounge emerged with a slower, lounge-style experience that helped introduce many Americans to the idea of spending intentional, calming time with cats.

Unlike traditional coffee shops, cat cafés are mission-driven spaces. Visitors typically pay for time in a cat lounge, and many locations work hand-in-paw with rescue organizations to help cats find their forever homes. Some serve drinks and snacks, others focus purely on the cats (and lots of love), but all of them offer a soft place for people to heal, smile, and feel seen.

We’re SO excited for our own backyard addition:

Catfé — Santa Clarita’s first cat café & lounge, opened in December 2025.

The Meep Meep team has visited this cat cafe and fell in love! Nestled in Canyon Country, Catfé is a cozy, cat-centered sanctuary designed for connection, calm, and quality time with adoptable cats. While Catfé doesn’t yet currently serve food or drinks on site, they’ve thoughtfully partnered with nearby local vendors in the shopping center — like Bagel Boys — so you can bring your favorite coffee or snack in with you while you enjoy time with the cats.

At Catfé, you can:

• Relax with a coffee or bagel from a local partner and a cuddle

• Meet adoptable cats from local rescue organizations

• Be part of something that lifts both people and pets
